SAN FRANCISCO (December 3, 2015) — Strava, the social network for athletes, has launched a completely re-engineered app for Apple’s watchOS 2. The new app taps into the Watch’s on-wrist heart rate sensor and delivers powerful real-time feedback to runners and cyclists.

Strava rebuilt its Watch app to make the most of the real-time heart rate data that Apple has now made available to third-party apps. A redesigned record screen displays heart rate data alongside moving time, distance, and split pace for runners or average speed for cyclists. The updated integration provides a best-in-class experience during activity, and afterwards, athletes can upload their run or ride and access exclusive Strava heart rate features like Suffer Score and Fitness & Freshness.

“The new Strava for Apple Watch shows your heart rate on the same screen as the rest of your key run and ride stats. Athletes can focus on their training without having to swipe between screens,” says Eric Kennedy, senior iOS engineer at Strava. “We integrated Apple Watch’s native capabilities with an athlete-first mindset and have battle-tested it in marathons and on long rides.”

Strava for watchOS 2, optimized for both Apple Watch sizes, delivers additional new features to help athletes train more effectively and analyze their performance:

  • Split notifications: Every mile or kilometer, or with just a tap on the wrist, Strava displays a runner’s split pace and average pace.

  • Health integration: Workouts recorded on Strava now count toward the Exercise ring in the Apple Watch Health app.

  • Segment completion notifications: Strava Premium athletes receive alerts when they complete a popular or starred segment. Overall and personal record times are highlighted immediately.

  • Heart rate analysis: All athletes will see their heart rate graphed with elevation and speed or pace. Strava Premium heart rate analysis shows average heart rate for each mile or kilometer split and the time spent in each heart rate zone.

  • Suffer Score: Strava Premium athletes can highlight the intensity and duration of their activities with Suffer Score.

Strava’s award-winning app is available now for watchOS 2 in the App Store.
